Why is MLK Jr so significant?

On January 15th 1929 a boy named Martin Luther King Jr was born in Atlanta, Georgia.  He often went by the nickname MLK and grew up in segregated times which meant black and white people weren’t allowed to go to the same schools, eat at the same restaurants or even drink from the same water fountains.  He felt angry that blacks were not treated equally and at 14 years old he won a contest expressing his thoughts on this issue.  He knew very early that he wanted to dedicate his life fighting for equality but, most importantly, knew he wanted to do so peacefully.  MLK Jr was arrested multiple times for standing up for what he believed in but while doing so he inspired many others to follow him and is considered one of the greatest speakers in history.  He gave his most famous “I Have a Dream'' speech at the age of 34 in front of over 250,000 people in Washington DC.  He was able to get the government to make changes in laws to prevent discrimination on race, color, religion, gender or national origin.  He was also the youngest winner at that time to win a Nobel Pease Prize and even led a group of people on a historic 54 mile march in Alabama to fight for equal rights to vote.  For all his hard work he eventually received a Presidential Medal of Freedom and a holiday that everyone celebrates on the 3rd Monday of January every year.
